Criminal Law in Lund Seminar Series Autumn 2025
Holding corporate actors accountable: legal struggles in the Lundin case
In this seminar, we welcome Isabel Schoultz, Associate Professor at the Sociology of Law Department at Lund University, Fanny Holm, Senior Lecturer at the Department of Law, Umeå University and Nina Törnqvist, researcher at the Department of Sociology, Uppsala University, to talk about their research project. Abstract: The ongoing criminal trial at Stockholm District Court of two former directors of Lundin Energy (now Orrön Energy), charged with alleged complicity in war crimes committed in Sudan between 1999 and 2003, reflects a growing global trend toward holding corporations and their executives criminally accountable for involvement in international crimes and human rights abuses. This presentation examines the legal struggles surrounding the trial and situates them within the broader international legal and political debate on the responsibility of corporations and corporate directors for complicity in such crimes. We will present findings from three recent papers, either published or under review, which contribute to this discussion. The presentation forms part of a research project funded by Riksbankens Jubileumsfond, whose overarching aim is to analyze the strategies and conflicts among legal actors engaged in the trial, which commenced in September 2023 and is scheduled to conclude in May 2026 at first instance.
