Author Workshop: Research Handbook on International Law and Protection of Natural Resources in Armed Conflict
In this workshop, contributing authors to the Research Handbook on Protection of Natural
Resources in Armed Conflict (eds Phoebe Okowa, Britta Sjöstedt and Nicole Citeroni) will
present and discuss their chapters. The book is due to be published by Edward Elgar
Publishing by next year.
Research Handbook on Protection of Natural Resources in Armed Conflict
Despite the acknowledged role of natural resources in armed conflict, there is currently no
comprehensive system governing their exploitation during war. The proposed handbook
aims to provide a coherent and systematic treatment of the topic within the broad
framework of public international law. This includes the examination of voluntary codes
and industry standards in an international-transnational system primarily directed at state
conduct, as well as the implementation of international standards concerning natural
resource protection in national and regional systems. The handbook also addresses
challenges arising from the diverse entities involved, including governments, rebel groups,
and corporations, each lacking a singular form of regulation, and seeks to establish criteria
for determining entities entitled to exercise public power in resource exploitation,
particularly in contested governmental authority situations.
