Social Europe at a crossroad. A symposium on the transformation, role, and future of labour law in Europe’s turbulent times.
Contemporary political and economic developments are confronting European countries with major challenges that affect both the present and future of Europe.
In this context, the social dimension of Europe, a fundamental pillar of the EU
constitutional order, appears particularly vulnerable. The rise of nationalism, the
resurgence of protectionism, restrictions on global trade, and ongoing conflicts at
Europe’s eastern border and in the Middle East all raise important questions
about the continuity and resilience of Social Europe. At the same time, the EU is
facing pressing issues that directly affect the living and working conditions of its
citizens, including the environmental crisis, digitalisation, artificial intelligence,
and the rising cost of living.
This symposium brings together European labour law scholars to reflect on these
developments and their potential impact on the future of Social Europe, through
the lens of European labour law. We invite you to take part in exploring how the
regulation of labour and work is changing, and what role that labour law can play
in responding to these transformations beyond national and jurisdictional
boundaries.
